At 11:56 on July 9th, the PRSS-1 (Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite) was successfully launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. This success will lead to further interest from the international community in China’s commercial remote sensing small satellites. The China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) Xi’an Institute in the Xi’an National Civil Aerospace Industry Base provided the data transmission subsystem for PRSS-1. The subsystem set up an unobstructed transmission channel for the images captured by the satellite camera to be sent back to the ground.

According to He Xinyang, the vice president of scientific research and production of the CAST Xi’an Institute, the data transmission subsystem for the PRSS-1 is a representative product in the “third generation of data transmission” system developed by Xi’an Institute. It has high product maturity and has been applied to over 20 satellites in China.

The data transmission subsystem for PRSS-1 is built with a “data transmission channel” between the satellite and the ground. After the camera is installed on the satellite, it captures the ground image information, the subsystem then performs complex computing and processing on the image data, and transmits it to the ground station through the data transmission antenna for distribution and application. According to Zhang Qian, the person in charge of PRSS-1 in the CAST Xi’an Institute, after the data transmission subsystem compresses, encodes and encrypts the image information, it is recorded and stored in accordance with the ground command requirements. Then the recorded and stored image information is transmitted as required.

After the PRSS-1 is in steady operation, it will play an important role in various fields, such as land resource surveys and help with environmental protection in Pakistan.
