Valery Gergiev and the Munich Philharmonic Inaugurated Xi'an International Music Festival

Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, the Munich Philharmonic and pianist Matsuev presented an exceptional symphony concert at Xi’an Concert Hall on Nov 21, inaugurating of the 16th Xi’an International Music Festival.

Founded in Munich in 1893, the Munich Philharmonic is one of the three principal orchestras in Germany. It attracted distinguished conductors of Gustav Mahler, Bruno Walter and Zubin Mehta, and premiered Symphony No. 4, Symphony No. 8 and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde.

The Munich Philharmonic with members of 120 presented two classics: the Fourth Concertos by Rachmaninoff and the Sixth Symphony by Tchaikovsky. The world-renowned conductor Valery Gergiev and pianist Matsuev, both from Russia, offered a top symphony feast integrated with both German and Russian characteristic and deeply impressed the Xi’an audience.

During the 16th Xi’an International Music Festival from Nov 2017 to Jan 2018, more than 670 artists from 15 countries and regions will arrive in Xi’an to present 34 performances and 20 seminars and offline promotions. The anticipated audience at main venues is 25 thousand person-times, and the seminars and offline promotions will attract 200 thousand citizens.

The music festival covers symphony, chamber music, solo, vocal, folk, world music and jazz. In addition to opening and closing ceremony shows, more performances will be given by Nuremberg Symphony, Italian Philharmonic Orchestra, Italian Philharmonic Orchestra, Walevska Recital, Leipzig Gewandhaus Quartet Concert and a musical theater Man of La Mancha. Meanwhile, a series of performances such as the Ode to Joy-Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 by a local symphony orchestra from Xi’an and Manchester Chamber Choir, and Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky Symphony Concert by the local symphony orchestra and the famous pianist Chen Sa will be staged.

In addition to main venues of Xi’an Concert Hall and Shaanxi Opera House, 8 sub-venues and 50 activities are arranged to foster music and cultural atmosphere in Xi’an and involve more audience in the festival.

Founded in 2002, the Xi’an International Music Festival is one of the earliest of its kind in China. With 348 performances, the 16th session this year has attracted more than 6000 artists from 40 countries and 360 thousand audience, becoming the most influential art festival in Shaanxi and even in China’s western regions.
